How is the contrast ratio calculated?
WCAG contrast is the ratio of relative luminance between two colors. 21:1 is max (white on black); 1:1 means no difference.
WCAG 2.2 defines AA (min 4.5:1 normal text, 3:1 large) and AAA (7:1 and 4.5:1). AA is a common EAA target — not a certification.
Low contrast also hurts readability in sunlight, on older screens, and when eyes are tired.
